Bodyboards
Bodyboarding is another water sport that has gained popularity lately. It is similar to surfing in that it rides the waves but the board used is different. Bodyboards are much shorter and are made of foam. It consists of a foam ‘core’ encapsulated by a plastic bottom and a softer foam top known as the deck. The core is made up from polyethylene, arcel or, more recently, polypropylene. Each type of foam gives the bodyboard a different amount of flex and control for the ride.
The board is strengthened by rods called stringers. Stringers reduce deformation and add stiffness which provides greater speed. Most boards are equipped with channels that increase surface area and allow greater wave hold and control. When looking to buy a bodyboard choose one with a smooth, slick surface. Cheaper boards have a porous-looking surface that tends to log water and eventually get heavy.
